Talking Story with Jillian Bontempo

Where are you from and what's the female surf community like there?
I am from a little town on the North East Coast of Florida called Flagler Beach. The women's surf community there is quite small and desolate. I had a few female surf friends, but none have really continued to hold onto surfing. There are about 2 or 3 other chicks from surrounding towns that I am still in contact with! We usually find ourselves in other parts of the world chasing waves.

I had a really great group of guy friends that I've grown up surfing with and  travelled all over the world with. We still share waves today. I think they really paved the path for me in regards to style, surf culture and just being some of my biggest surf inspirations.

You're currently based in Byron Bay - what's daily life like for you there (work situ, surfing etc)
Funny enough, when I first moved to Byron Bay, I was cleaning air bnb's almost everyday- but now I've put the rags down and now I am a freelance photographer, model, and dabble in work in the film industry! I teach pilates too!
So, my usual day starts off with a pilates class at Peaches Studio, then a coffee from Roadhouse and then I start doing some work on my laptop and between all of that I find time to squeeze a couple surfs in! Every day seems to be different depending on the job that I do and whether the waves are good.

Talk to us about Pilates - how did you land on that as a vocation?
Since I was a young girl, I have always played sports and been extremely active. After I left University where I was playing Division 2 Lacrosse, I found that surfing just wasn't enough for me. I found pilates and it became my little sanctuary. Then I realised I did a lot of work that served and benefitted me, but I wanted to do something for others. So I earned my certificate and started teaching. It's extremely rewarding. It was also a huge leap of confidence for me ( I never thought I could talk in front of a large group of people AND tell them what to do). I love how happy it makes people.

If we came to visit you in Byron, where would you take us? What would we do? And where are the coldest beers at??
I would take you to come meet my cat, Cheese.
After a little surf in the Bay we could wander over to Stone and Wood in the industrial!

Any big projects or trips lined up for 2025?
I've just come home from New Zealand where the Single Fin Mingle was held! We did a road trip afterwards and had a very good time, even with heaps of car troubles.
I'm  pretty good at last minute trips so nothing specifically planned, but this year is feeling like it is holding up to be a big one and a good one... After I work out another visa!

Style us out for the lineup, what would you have us wearing:
Whatever feels comfy and stays on in the surf!

Favourite surf spot or destination:
Well, I am pretty blessed to live walking distance to the pass... It 's hard to wrap my head around the fact that my front door step is one of the greatest waves in the world. I am very happy and grateful to be able to play, work, and live on Bundjalung land.

Words you live by:
"It'll all come out in the wash."

Top 10 essential (surf) travel items:
I always take my camera (or a few different ones), a couple rolls of film, zinc, probably a few items regarding a surfboard and fins, a book- I'm currently reading harakumi Murakami (he's my favourite), my DMC fins- cause a body surf is better than any surf, and heaps of cute clothes or swimmers, depending on where I am going haha

Anything else we need to know/how can we support what you do:
Just be kind! It's nice to be kind.
