STEPHANIE SCHECHTER x THE SALTY DREAMERS

We asked two young surf frothers, Californian native, Stephanie Schechter, and budding Australian photographer, Jemma Scott, to roadtest some gear for us in Byron a few weeks back and tell us, in their own words, what style in the lineup means for them...

A phrase that can only truly be achieved with the elegance and grace that encompasses a female surfer and the natural finesse that they bring to the water. Style is a contentious topic as it is: with a vast population it would be dreadfully monotonous to have only one pre-conceived conception of ‘style.’ This doesn’t change when you move to the water.

Is it the one with the biggest smile that can light up a whole lineup and just emanate pure joy whenever they’re in the water, the one who’s having the most fun? Is it the one who effortlessly enthralls us with their simple finesse and down to earth demeanour? The ones who dare to be vibrant or different in what they choose to wear? I believe style is not something that can be contrived, something that cannot be forced - you either have it, or fondly admire those who do. Unless of course, you're dressed in Salt Gypsy threads - it’s all about the confidence baby!

It’s quite funny actually (now anyway) because the shoot itself was almost a disaster. After a flooded water housing shooting content up north on an island in the Great Barrier Reef, my little Canon G15 was undeniably fried. With my main asset as cooked as a Barramundi frying in the coals, and little money from 3 months of meandering around the East coast, I had to find a replacement camera & housing - fast. Thankfully, Gumtree saved the day with an old Olympus E-330, the first digital SLR to permit an image preview on the screen… oh boy. With Steph heading down the coast we had this one opportunity to get the shots and all in all, we think it turned out pretty dandy.

Steph and I ventured into the water for what would be another beautiful morning down at The Pass. Wearing her pink Salt Gypsy rashie and red high-waisted bottoms, she was assuredly an appealing aesthetic on her matching watermelon patterned board.

With an influx of people coming up the coast for the Noosa Long Boarding festival, we picked off some empty peelers on the inside. A morning of fun, friends and stylin' in our seriously funky threads (they make everything better).

When you feel excited and confident about what you’re wearing, it really does reflect in the way you surf.

"The driving force behind what I do is wanting to see more style in the lineup - from raising the level of everyday women's confidence & surf ability; to what we wear in the ocean reflecting our individual personalities and personal style. With the flourishing of indie women's surf labels now, it's a great time to find your own surf style and have that translate into greater confidence in the lineup. Feel good and surf better."  ~ Danny Clayton, oceanwoman & founder of Salt Gypsy.

Stephanie wears our Squarecut Onepiece in Navy Star (now sold out) and styles the Turtleneck rashguard in Candy Pink with the reversible Drifter surf bottoms in Candy Pink/Poppy Red.

A big thank you to the girls for taking the time to roadtest our gear and running amok in the hectic Byron lineups!
