Meet our surfwear makers - Australian stretchwear industry veterans | www.saltgypsy.com #whomademyclothes #fashionrevolution #saltgypsy

Meet our makers: Judy and Lindy.

Two Australian stretchwear industry veterans working from a boutique production factory on the Gold Coast.

A woman-owned & operated business, we visit these legends on a weekly basis. Working closely with such experienced seamstresses has enabled us to constantly learn more about pattern construction, stretch fabrics, nylon threads & correct tensions for different types of stitching. This knowledge then allows us to  continue tweaking our fits, cuts & finishing processes based on their expert advice.

Most of our production is completed inhouse at Judy's factory though she also outsources different parts of construction that require specific machinery or technical expertise such as flatlocking on our surf leggings and printing of our recycled nylon lycra fabric. During busy production timeframes, Judy brings in more machinists to help with the workload. These women are a mix of Australian and New Zealand trained machinists, patternmakers and fabric cutters.

The recycled nylon lycra we use is sourced from the Australian distributor of an Italian fabric made from 100% regenerated nylon yarn called ECONYL®. Bulk coloured recycled lycra (our candy pink, gold, black etc) is shipped direct to the factory to begin the cut & sew process, while our Salt Gypsy printed lycra comes from one of three different sublimation printers in either Brisbane, Gold Coast, or Sydney - depending how quickly we need the print fabric to be delivered (ie. to keep with the rapid growth we've been experiencing!).

In learning more about the Fashion Revolution currently taking place around the globe and watching the film, The True Cost - which we highly recommend viewing and can be watched on Netflix - we are proud to have restructured our supply chain over the last three years to be more in line with our own personal and business values, as well as be a part of this global movement driving awareness and change within the fashion industry.

It is our dream to see a flourishing of independent women's surf brands where ethical production, responsible business practices and thoughtful design is the industry standard and not the exception.
