Talking Story With Hondée Gongolo

Where are you from and what do you do for a living?
I'm originally from France, half-French (from my mum) half-Chadian (from my dad). Living in Ericeira, Portugal, for three years now :)
What's the female surf community like there?
Very supportive! Since day one, I keep meeting women showing me where to surf, how to be self confident, and how to get over the fear as Ericeira is quite a challenge to surf haha. I started surfing kinda late at 35 years old. It's even more helpful to have this female surf community telling you to go for it. And to be fair, I feel as supported by my male friends, they've shared a lot about surfing with me, too, and pushed me to go for more challenges, too. It's a good balance, for me.
We’ve heard you’re a pretty amazing chef! Tell us more about your career or work life so far?
I like to say that I'm more an earth defender than a chef. I decided to cook plant based to support our local land, Vizinha, a Regenerative agriculture land, to share that cooking seasonally is easy and ...still sexy ;) It's a good way to change our food system, protect the nature. It's now my everyday life here in Ericeira and around Portugal. I work for surf retreats, pop up food in Lisbon, organise my wild dinners every Thursday in Ericeira to share crazy plant-based menu around a table of 15 people. And it's just the beginning of my journey, I want to expand the seasonal plant-based food approach all over Portugal and abroad.
(Find Hondées rad plant based and seasonal cooking here).
Favourite travel destination:
I live in Portugal, and honestly it's my favourite travel destination as well haha! To travel I would choose south Portugal, more chill, more wild, too, and for the longboard you have many lovely spots down there.
Words you live by:
It's badass to care. As I think important to care about earth, about human relations, about women, about ourselves, about the brand you choose to wear, about how you behave. Yes, it's very cool to care, not always easy but it matters a lot.
