Where are you from and what's the female surf community like there?
I grew up in Avoca Beach, NSW. Myself and a couple of my other surfer girl friends joined the Women in Waves when were around 13 years old. It's a group of womenof all ages who surf from all over the Central Coast. We'd get together for monthly comps, have surf trips to Foster, yet as fun as it was, I didn't last long as I prefer to be surfing freely at my home break..with all the boys..ha! Other than that, it wasn't until I moved to the Bay (Byron) that I felt a strong presence of a female surfing community.
So, what the heck is Sunshine & The Eccentrics? Sunshine & The Eccentrics is a boutique agency representing independent creatives. I build and share a strong representation of stylish, unique, practical designs for those who live the simple yet adventurous lifestyle. Showing seasonal collections, assisting brand promotion and ensuring a smooth happy flow between the stores and the creatives.
Does being based in Byron influence what you do and if so, how? Most definitely. We all come together naturally, encouraging and inspiring each other. Such a good mix of creative like-minded folk here in the Bay. All my friends have their fingers in the creative pies, surf and share a conscious-minded lifestyle. Hence the gravitational pull within the friendships and how 'Sunshine' came about.
What have been some challenges in creating your dream lifestyle business and how are you overcoming this? The beginning was challenging. Taking the leap from working full time and finding my new flow creating 'Sunshine'. One of my dogs, Charles, passed away around this time a year ago then a week later my van completely died. I copped my log to my cheek somewhere in there, too, and that was the turning point. The universe will keep knocking at you until you make the shift - BIG thank you to my friends during that time. I realigned and fully gave Sunshine my all. New accounts came forward and I opened my heart that I am worthy of abundance and success with 'Sunshine'. This is when 'Sunshine' really began to blossom and I found my new flow. If you believe it, you can and will create it. The neverending practice of patience and TRUST. Every day I thank the uni-source. So grateful to those I represent, that allow me to live my dream lifestyle business at home on the farm with my heart, fur babe Ulu. The travel part suits me perfectly, as it feeds my need to tap out of complacency. I can be a bit of a hermit when I'm home on the farm, and thankfully I soon start to crave adventure. Adventure is one of my favourite ways to learn and to stay inspired. So yeah, the travel part of 'Sunshine' allows for and brings me a good balance.
You just spent some time in NZ so 2 questions: 1) did you score some good waves? Any standout sessions or lineups? Oh I love NZ. It's so raw, wild and real. We scored an empty righthand point to ourselves. It was snowing on the mountains behind us, constant light rain and land temp of 4 degrees, yet as we stood there huddled together the waves called us in. So unprepared for the cold snap, it just added to the high...and 2) how does surfing in NZ differ from where you live in AU? The cooler darker waters and its sea creatures and the grand landscape was the magnified difference for me. Although, surfing Taranaki beach breaks I was very nostalgic, taking me back home, where I grew up surfing the beachies on the Central Coast. I was riding my 6'10 Duet and loving it. Falling in love with the shorter board again. The local folk where ever we surfed were so welcoming. Oh I love NZ.
What does style in the lineup mean to you?
It's practicality and tasteful. If I'm feeling comfortable in my chosen surfing suit I definitely surf better. The like's of SG and Atmosea add to my surfing life for sure. The SG Betty Bottom I swear changed my life. High-waisted, sit's comfy on my hips and keeps my everything snug. Combine that with my Atmosea crop vest, I'm good to go.
Favourite surf spot or destination: I'm a lover of the left and warm sunshine, so Indonesia continuously pulls me back.
Words you live by:
"It's nice to be nice" - true words repeated endlessly since I was little by my mother dearest. TRUST. Be here now.
